The Museum of Garrett Street

You may have heard the heartbreaking news - 13 Garrett Street is closing down after 30 years.

13 Garrett Street is a two-floor monstrosity in the centre of Pōneke that has been both a home and community space since the mid 90s. It has functioned as a gig venue, an exhibition and meeting space, a refuge, a non-commercial space to create art and hold workshops, screenings, political discussions and organising.

And it is being closed for commercial re-development in November 2026.

We are using this time, the final breaths of Garrett, to gather the histories of the building’s uses and stories from the thousands of people who have spent time in this iconic space.

This archiving project was started at Matariki / Midwinter 2025, by a group of current and former residents of 13 Garrett Street, and we will collect in earnest until the doors close for the final time.

The archive is both digital and physical

We are collecting written memories, photos, videos, audio files, gig and event posters, news stories, documents and artworks about the location 13 Garrett Street, from anyone who interacted with it in any way.

Right now we are focused on collecting, but we have big plans for the future.
